8 Things that you could do to send a toddler happily to school

I have already shared articles about 'why a pre-school is necessary' and 'How to choose one' in this blog site. Having experienced, sending a toddler to school without crying is not a very easy job. With the help of my son's pre-school correspondent I learnt few tips that should be done to make the toddler go to school happily. I am listing them here.

  1.  Toddlers are yet to develop a trust that you would go back and pick him up once the school is over. So insist on the point that, always you will be back once the school gets over, to develop the trust in him.
  2. Before going to school show some pre-school or school videos in youtube and let him know that only teachers and students can be inside the school and parents will have to drop the kids near the school gate, so that  he will learn to control his 'separation anxiety' near the school gate.
  3. Kids always love to stay in a routine. So always do not rush your kid to the school. Maintain a slow and fixed routine in the morning like brushing, drinking milk, playing, bathing, eating, getting ready, praying and leaving to school.(Remember all these cannot happen in 30 minutes.)
  4. Do not skip the morning meal for the kid. In spite of the several health issues, the kid becomes very fussy  which makes it difficult for you as well as the teacher to settle him.
  5. Few parents used to threatened the kid telling that they will send him to school if he doesn't eat or if he doesn't sleep. Those parents are unknowingly creating a negative thought about the school in the kid's mind. It is better to refrain from such activities.
  6. Avoid telling that he is crying while going to school to any of your family members or friends especially in front of him, even though he does.
  7. Try to learn few of your kid's friend's name at school either through him or through the teacher and use their names in your conversations with your kid. Tell them that all his friends are waiting at school for him to play with, in the morning when he refuses to go to school.
  8. Having done all this do not expect your child to go to school happily from day one. It would take few days(say 10-15) to get settled down initially. Avoid taking leaves during the settling down period.
